Gotta love that hairnet!

In answer to a question from 'Coronette', Ena Sharples had three children with Alfred Sharples (who died young). The children were Ian, who drowned when he was four, Madge and Vera. Vera died of a brain tumour in 1967 but I haven't been able to find out anything about mysterious Madge - can anyone else fill us in?

Ena was well before my Coro watching time but, like most people, I could pick her out in a line-up! Ena was Elsie Tanner's nemisis (Elsie was a little too loose for Ena's liking) though in one of her memorable moments Ena talked Elsie out of taking an overdose.

Below is a link to a clip of Ena and Elsie's showdown - Elsie's been receiving nasty letters and thinks Ena's been sending them (hmm...sound familiar?). The clip's 9 minutes long but is well worth it! Hold on to your hats ladies...

PS Keep your eyes and ears peeled for a young Ken Barlow!

I well remember seeing Ena in her hairnet back in the day - she was a force to be reckoned with. Her drinking buddies were Martha (who died early in the show) and Minnie Caldwell who had a ginger cat called Bobby. I think Ena looked after the local community centre/church hall. Underneath her gruff exterior she was a kind soul. You don't see many hairnets these days do you? Can you even buy them now? Eee, them were the days!
