Sing us a song - if you must...
Did anyone else catch last night's An Audience With Coronation Street? I knew an audience with Robbie Williams would involve singing, but I hadn't realised an audience with Coro would too! It wasn't until half way through that I realised the point of the show was to highlight the hidden singing talents of Coro's cast members. Unfortunately, in some cases it would have been better to keep them hidde
n.
My two favourites, though, were Wendi Peters (aka Cilla) looking very glam in shiny red and Richard Fleeshman (aka moody, broody Craig) who sang two songs, one with Andrew Whyment (aka Fizz's little 'Kirky'). It turns out that Richard actually won the UK's Soap Star Superstar - what a shame we missed that one in NZ...not!
It was quite bizarre seeing all the Coro St faces together (and not in the Rovers) - it was difficult to look at William Roache as a real person and not just as dreary Ken Barlow (although I have heard a rumour that William's just as dreary as Ken in real life...). The surprise for me was Malcolm Hebden (aka Norris) whose droll sense of humour brought out one of the show's few laughs - I guess you'd have to have a sense of humour to play Norris!

I was rivetted to the screen - LOVED the show and made my kids watch too! I loved the seeing Cilla singing and also Kirk and Craig. Craig deserved to win the Soapstar Superstar - he was fantastic. Liz MacDonald in a shocking outfit (ie worse than she would wear on Coro) should not have sung. Her talent should be confined to acting, not singing. I also loved the tribute to Johnny Briggs (Mike) and all the old footage. I kept saying "Ooh there's such-and-such" (Suzy Birchall, Elsie Tanner etc) and my kids said "Who?" I hope they do this once a year as a little Coro bonus for us fans. Actually a Coro Xmas singalong would be great!
