You're not in Guatemala now, Dr Roache

**BREAKING NEWS**
In another case of life imitating art (see the post entitled 'Scandal'), this Friday Bill Roache (aka Ken) is being awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Chester for his “uniquely sustained contribution” to television! Bill has said: “I am thrilled as my father was a doctor so I can finally be called Dr Roache which would have made him very proud.” Hmm...well maybe he's not getting the award for his Ken-Barlow-esque book smarts, but rather for his 'street' smarts (ha ha ha).
Below is a link to a BBC news article from 2000 about Bill that includes some interesting facts about him and Ken Barlow (did you know Bill spent five years in the army before beginning an acting career?):

Even more interesting is this article (did you know Bill's actually 75 years old?!):

Ken (William) surely deserves that honorary degree for his tireless service to television! Indeed, if I had my way there would be a degree in Coronation Street Studies offered at Manchester University with papers in pint-pulling and the dialectical materialism of life in the street.
Well done Ken!

I'd drop my MLIS studies for an MCSS in a flash! And it wouldn't just be about pints - it would also be about gin and tonics, sherries and dry white wines.

Maybe you could even do 'Apprenticeship 101' where Audrey would teach hairstyling, Cilla would teach fish and chip frying and Fred would teach butchery...Good times!
